Letter to the Editor

April 2, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

Dear Ashlyee I would agree that many students feel they should get very specific study guides and some do come with a sense of entitlement. This is discouraging to professors (I taught at Pepperdine for six years) because we aren’t educating students so they can pass a test.

In your column you did specifically say that Pepperdine was “easy”. In my opinion you are making a very general remark about the nature of Pepperdine.

Your statement is entirely inaccurate.

This would be like saying that all Pepperdine students are rich which I know is not true. Also by your statement I guessed that you would be a communication style major for I have heard from other folks that those are relatively easy majors.

As a sports medicine alumna and a former instructor at Pepperdine I disagree with your saying that Pepperdine is easy. In the sciences Pepperdine is by far more difficult and challenging than many if not all of the “famous” schools like Stanford UCLA and Harvard.

We routinely have students who transfer to Pep commenting that Pep science majors are more difficult and intense than the classes at their IVY Schools. Primarily because we don’t do multiple choice exams and have graduate teaching assistants in science at Pepperdine. Your statement that Pepperdine is “easy” is discrediting to those of us who are in challenging majors. If you want more challenge you could switch majors.
