Latin fever took over the cafeteria Saturday night. While the rain poured down cold outside, the Spanish Honor Society steamed up the Hahn Fireside Room with “Bailamos,” the honor society’s dance formal.
DJ Carlos “Sexy Mexi” Mendez, president of the Latino Student Association, rocked the party to a mix of Argentine hits and American hip-hop.
The fiesta also included the quintessential thrashing of the helpless piñata, and, of course, refreshments, including chips and salsa to fit with the night’s theme.
Sigma Delta Pi, the society’s official name, has approximately 45 members, but the dance attracted more than 100 guests.
Students spiffed up in formal attire and danced the salsa, cumbia, and shake-whatever-feels-right from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. when everyone had to call the night quits.
Senior Laura Franks described the event as “so much fun” that, come 11 p.m., people weren’t ready for the night to be over.
“People wanted to keep dancing,” Franks said. “It was surprising what a great turnout they got.”
Franks added that the mix of music and the dressed-up atmosphere added to the good time.
“I would definitely go again if it’s going to be like that,” she said.
“That sort of thing would be a good reunion for European international programs, too,” Franks added. “They could play Euro-pop or something.”
Diana Dodson, president of the Spanish Honor Society and co-organizer of the dance, said the club would like to make it an annual event. However, because the majority of the organizers graduate this year, it will be up to future classes to bring it back.
