Latino club spices up charity with Salsa Night

Instead of  “Dancing with the Stars,” students can get the same intensely passionate fun with dancing with the waves. Tonight, the Latino Student Association presents just that with their fifth annual “Amor and Salsa.”

The Latino Student Association urges students to attend the event and watch as the Waves Café evolves from just another average college cafeteria to a dazzling Discoteca with Pepperdine flair.

“We are looking forward to a night full of great food, music and dancing,” said LSA president Artie Calhoun.

For the event students from a number of student groups and Greek organizations will put on their dancing shoes and show their Salsa skills for everyone to see.

Each couple will be competing for tickets for a round trip flight to Catalina Island and the reputation of the ultimate Salsa dancers of all time — or at least until next year.

The students not participating will be able to sit back and enjoy the ambience and the entertainment.

If that is not enough, dinner will also be provided. LSA has taken care of all the aspects to make this an overall enjoyable experience and Pepperdine students are taking notice.

“I can’t wait to go,” said freshman Devyn Forest. “It sounds like a lot of fun. I like getting to know about other cultures, plus dancing excites me.”

Advertised as “the biggest Salsa night ever,” on their Facebook group, the LSA plans to come through with a spicy show — literally.

As part of the event, a salsa recipe competition will be held.

“I have to win,” said junior Megan Souleles. “My ex-boyfriend is submitting my mom’s recipe.”

The one who makes the tastiest salsa of all the land, or at least of all submissions, will receive their choice of tickets to either “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” or to “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.”

Though the event seems to be all fun and games, the night also has an underlying purpose.

“Our goal for the event is to help raise money to benefit charities in the Los Angeles area. LSA chooses a different organization every year so that we are able to provide help for a wide variety of causes that face the Latino community,” said Calhoun.

The money raised from the ticket sales this year will benefit Brothers of Charity.

Brothers of Charity is a non-profit organization and its purpose is to serve the Los Angeles community by providing resources that are not readily available for those who are not as financially stable as the general population.

It is spiritually based and places an emphasis on God’s calling to serve the poor and under-privileged.

The charity houses the impoverished members of the Los Angeles community and provides them with the basic necessities required to live.

The organization also helps those who need to learn English.

Students are encouraged to donate toiletries to help the cause as well. Students can bring donations to the event or to the ticket table when they buy their tickets.

Tickets for “Amor and Salsa” will be on sale today in the Waves Café for $10 until 2 p.m. Otherwise, tickets cost $12 tonight at the door. The sizzling night starts seating at 8 p.m. and the entertainment begins at 8:30. Attire for the event is semi-formal.
