Lady Waves take step back

December 9, 2010 by Kayla Ferguson

Malibu Calif. – The Pepperdine Women’s Basketball team took a step back Tuesday night when they fell to a tough San Diego State squad 75-61. After returning home from a 57-54 win over Oregon State last Friday the Waves couldn’t put it together against an Aztec team (3-4) that used a physical defense and up-tempo offense to keep the momentum throughout.

SDSU Center Paris Johnson led the attack for the Aztecs with 16 points 12 coming in the first half. The Aztecs offense was facilitated Coco Davis who finished with a double-double with 14 points and 10 assists.

The first half of play was sloppy for both teams with SDSU only leading at the half 35-29 despite the Waves only shooting 27 percent from the field. The game was full of mistakes for both teams combining for 36 total turnovers.

To start the second half the Aztecs used a 12-4 run to take a 47-33 lead before junior guard Jazmine Jackson was fouled on a lay-up attempt. The Waves were never able to recover and found themselves down 71-51 with 1:50 to play.

Jackson was the Waves’ leading scorer with 13 finishing 7-of-7 from the foul line. She was backed up by Lauren Bell’s 10 the only other player to reach double figures for the Waves.
