Keep money safe, budget fall style

August 28, 2012 by Candace Lowry

If you want to catch everyone’s eye on campus with new fall fashions, you can do it without breaking the bank. Keep in mind these eight essentials for the upcoming semester and you will be ready to walk the Pepperdine runway.
1. The ceramic watch can be found on nearly every celebrity and is a great piece that can be dressed up or played down on a casual day.  Choose a neutral color like chocolate brown or cream, and layer with a few thin bracelets.  Michael Kors, a top of the line designer, makes some great pieces, but if you don’t want to spend $250, try the shops on Melrose.
2. Many designers are releasing Wayfarer sunglasses with a retro twist. A slight cat-eye shape has been added to accentuate female facial features and create a more feminine look.  Emma Stone and Kourtney Kardashian have been seen starting this trend wearing Ray-Bans and chic designer shades.  Again, Micahel Kors will run you about $120, but to get the look for less, Forever 21 and H&M both have styles for under $10.
3. To dress up a casual outfit, just add a few gold accents, whether it is a black shoe with a gold heel, a gold watch or even a T-shirt with some metallic embellishments. Charlotte Olivia pumps are $850, but you can get the same look for $50 by Rampage.  Vintage and consignment shops are best to find a gold item.  If you’re willing to wait for shipping, Etsy is another great bet.
4. In nearly every fashion and entertainment magazine, you’ll find celebrities wearing and designers pumping out scalloped shorts. They are comfortable, cool and come in countless fun patterns providing a bold opportunity to mix and match.  Forever New, Free People and H&M will have the best selection for great prices.  They even come with cute beading and embroidery.
5. Whether it is eagle necklaces, neutral sweaters or feather headbands, everyone is looking for Aztec-inspired accessories.  Free People and Urban Outfitters are the two places to find affordable wear. These accessories carry the summer trend into fall by transitioning the bright colors to neutral.
6. For a fun night out in LA or Malibu, every girl needs a bright dress. It’s cool, flirty and makes you stand out. Each bright color brings out a certain skin tone. Although it will not be able to be carried into winter, a bright piece is great to have until November. Pairing it with a black blazer and heels can give a more chic look, or you can wear it alone with bright accessories and a cream shoe. To find more examples of this trend, look to brands like Shopbop and H&M.
7. To ring in the school year, ankle boots are versatile and comfortable.  You can wear a leopard print pair with jean shorts or black leggings or even go for a bold look with a short dress. DSW and Urban Outfitter have a huge selection, and boots never go out of style.  For a perfect classroom look, pair boots with jean shorts, a simple tee and a gold Aztec-inspired statement necklace. For a finishing touch, wear the cat-eye shades on the way.
8. Don’t forget that browns and beiges are great transitional colors to transform your wardrobe from summer to fall.  Also, being in Malibu, one can never go wrong in a slouchy oversized sweater or tee and jean shorts. Accompany your basics with bright statement jewelry and comfy sandals for a great look on the go, and you’ll be turning heads soon enough.
