Hurricane Katrina makes waves in Malibu’s gas prices. The latest triple-A survey reported a gallon of regular, unleaded gas up nearly 46 cents from August 26th, the Friday before Hurricane Katrina knocked out most of the Gulf Coast’s oil industry, including nine refiners that account for ten percent of U.S. gasoline production.
Linda Yannetty, a Malibu resident and owner of the Malibu company Yannetty Landscape, said her company has been affected by the increase price of gas. Yannetty said in her company she owns 12 vehicles and her cost of fuel has already gone up one thousand dollars from last year. Yannetty said, “I want to see the government put more attention to other sources of transportation. I know the technology exists. There is just too much power between oil companies and the government.”
Front desk operator of Chevron Gas on Pacific Coast Highway, Caesar Rosales, hopes the price of gas will go down soon for everyone. Rosales said, “This increase on gas is also hard on the employees because we also have to pay this high amount and still receive the same amount in salary.”
Tom Kloza of the Oil Price Information Service said, “I think the highest prices you may see until February are over the next 15 days.”
