Every fall, new SGA officers move into the office situated in the Tyler Campus Center. The decorations on the walls may change from year to year, but just like any new governing body, the new leaders are figuring out how to reach Pepperdine students.

One annual event that will have the freshmen involved is the upcoming elections. The number of senators is based on class size. There will be six-senator positions open as well as one for freshman class president.

In addition, there are two open seats for sophomore senators, the sophomore president and a senior senator seat.

Election information packets will be available Wednesday, outside the SGA office. A campaign meeting for these positions will be on, Sept. 7 at 8 p.m. in the Fireside Room. The online elections will take place the following week for a 24-hour period starting, Sept. 14.

Also working a few feet away in the TCC is the new Programming Board. PB leaders are working on offering more active recreational activities for students. Their plan is to work with the Campus Recreational Center to try and motivate students to get involved with more physically active oriented events.

“About two-fifths of our campus do not consider themselves involved,” PB Director Justin Schneider said. “Involvement in on-campus events is necessary to developing a sense of connectedness to the students and the University. On-campus events also offer safe alternatives for students.”

Only through teamwork between students, faculty and staff will the PB be able to attain goals set for this year, according to Schneider.

With this in mind, PB has begun to plan events to draw students. “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” will be shown in Elkins on Thursday.

“That is only a beginning of the wonderful movies Jonathan Patty, the media and technology coordinator, has planned for Pepperdine,” Schneider said.

Grits, a hip hop Christian music group, and 4th Avenue Jones, a hip-hop, soul and rock band, will be the first concert hosted by the PB and will be on Friday, Tickets are $6 for students at Smother’s Theatre.
