Give ugly love this holiday

Assistant Life Editor

The world is over the plight of the single girl. On Valentine’s Day, couples seem to come out of the wood work -– walking and holding hands over here, cuddling in a corner over there, leaving the one leading the single life to cry alone at night. But the truth is, no one cares, Valentine’s Day is just a day.

It also seems that this special day is wrought with doom and dread on the guy’s part, as it mostly has to do with pleasing the girl. Perhaps this is the real issue behind Pepperdine’s serious lack of dating scene as boys do not feel the need to have to please a girl. Of course, the real problem comes in knowing the difference between what a girl wants and what a girl needs for V-Day.

The day can be a tough one for the single, stable, coupled or married alike, but the hysterically, over-commercialized hype, need not get in the way, as long as in the end, one is with the people they love the most. A few Pepperdine students let on about what they expect for Valentine’s Day.

“I expect flowers, a nice card and can’t expect much more from my boyfriend because he’s working. I’ve always been very pessimistic about this area of life. I mean the guys here expect girls to be dressed everyday and if you’re a ‘real person,’ then nothing, no attention.” – Senior Megan Crum

“I’m really shy so it’s hard for me anyway, but my ideal Valentine’s Day actually already happened two years ago. The rest of my life is really awkward, but that day was perfect. I’m from Honduras, and so I took my girl up into the hills and I had dinner all set up there for her with sunflowers everywhere, because they were her favorite. Then we talked and ate and watched the stars. She broke up with me the next day.” – Freshmen Giovonni Porta

“I’ve never had a Valentine at Pepperdine. I’m not going to hold my breath for it to happen though because otherwise I’d just pass out. My theory is not even based on Pepperdine; I think I’m just ugly. Boys just think I’m a good study partner. However, a Lilly’s burrito on the beach at sunset would really be ideal for me if someone was interested.” – Junior Heather Hirata

“I think we’re just going to go to Disneyland, and she better like it.”  – Freshmen Eric Olson

“I’m for equal rights. Women are fighting for that, right? When I think of Valentine’s Day I just think about how one-sided it is. There was this movement a little while ago where a few guys were trying to push for a man version of V-Day called Steak and BJ Day. I don’t remember what date it was supposed to be though.” – Sophomore Clayton Snyder

“I’m really chill about Valentine’s. Actually, I’m a dork, as long as it’s a nice night and I’m having fun. I don’t really care about it. The best thing for a guy to do is not be all romantic and frilly. I say let’s go for a jog or maybe a baseball game.” – Junior Monique Harris

“I would like maybe get some edible flowers or maybe even edible underwear if it fits. For the most part I just want to have a fun night out with the girls where I don’t have to think about boys.” – Freshman Kristina Korban
