Freshman president finds place in SGA after runoff election

September 24, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

During a runoff for the freshman president on Thursday Sept. 17 the class of 2013  elected Texas native Christie Myers.  Myers beat out opponent Christopher Crowder.

“[The runoff election] was surprising because I didn’t realize that it happened a lot Myers wrote in an e-mail. I was really excited that I had gotten that far but also a little nervous.”

Myers declined a phone or in-person interview.

A native of Dallas Meyers said she was attracted to Pepperdine because of the International Programs academic reputation and the California location near the beach.

“It’s just a great place to be Myers wrote. She was surprised to find when she arrived for New Student Orientation that the Student Government Association class electioncors were right around the corner.

The hardest part was that it was so close to the beginning of school Myers wrote. So I had all the other stressors of settling in.”

She said she wanted to jump into the Pepperdine experience.

“SGA was something that I really wanted to do she wrote. Serving the student body seemed like a really worthwhile thing to be involved in. I thought it would be a great experience a way to get involved and to meet people.”

Myers began gathering followers shortly after classes began.

“I liked her warm approach said freshman Mary Tillman-Young. I felt that she really cared about helping us as a student body.”

With the run-off election and stress of campaigning behind her Myers says she is looking forward to her first year at Pepperdine. Myers and her colleagues in student government have a busy agenda planned for the coming year.

“The freshman class representatives have a lot of resolutions we would like to work toward this year on behalf of the freshman class student body wrote Myers. Our goal is to make the Pepperdine freshman experience as unforgettable as possible by removing any barriers that may hinder a freshman’s experience and to provide a venue of community to the students.”

Myers wrote she was committed to working very hard for her constituents. “We invite anyone to join us for our open meetings every Wednesday morning to learn more about the things SGA is working on.”

Myer’s constituents also have high expectations.

“I think she will do a good job said freshman Glenn Fenderson. I expect her to keep us well informed of what’s going on.”

As freshman president Myers’ goal will be to represent the freshman class by serving as the liaison between the students and administration.

Myers wrote she is  also excited to work with the other classes in the SGA.

“Our senate will initiate and follow through with policy changes and plan semi-annual town hall meetings wrote Myers. We are planning on investigating issues of high importance to the student body and looking into what we can do to address them.”

Despite how busy she’s been in just the first few weeks of the semester Meyers has no regrets.

“I have been able to meet so many great people campaigning” wrote Myers “and it has been a great way to get involved in campus life right away.”
