Once again, the Democratic and Republican presidential candidates waited on pins and needles for the swing states — Ohio, Florida, Wisconsin, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and Arizona — to determine which candidate would take his place in the White House.

The 2012 election also set a milestone in social media’s role in politics. Twitter and Facebook exploded with posts leading up to the official announcement of the 44th President of the United States and continued to do so long into the night.

Incumbent candidate Barack Obama secured presidential victory and was reelected for a second term Tuesday. President Obama won the election with 303 electoral votes to Rep. candidate Mitt Romney’s 206 votes.
