For the second time this season Pepperdine’s women’s tennis team has had to postpone a match against Cal Poly due to forecasted rain in Malibu. Pepperdine was scheduled to open its season with a match against the Cal Poly Mustangs on Jan. 18 in Malibu but due to rain that day the two universities planned to meet March 31.
Meteorologists predicted heavy rain in Malibu yesterday but not a drop fell on the Pepperdine campus. The match scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. would have not been rained out but the coaches of both Pepperdine and Cal Poly decided ahead of time to cancel the match due to the rainy prediction.
Pepperdine sophomore Andrea Oates said the Waves were disappointed the weather prevented another match against Cal Poly but said the time off gave them a chance to further prepare.
“We were a little disappointed because this is the second time we have had to reschedule the Cal Poly match because of the weather but it always gives us more time to prepare and it ups the anticipation for when we finally do get to play them Oates said.
The Waves have rescheduled again with the Mustangs for a third shot at a match to be played on Wednesday, April 7 in the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
The team, now ranked 54th, has five more home games in its twelve-home-game streak before it competes in the West Coast Conference Tournamentin San Diego at the end of this month.
The Waves continue their regular season play this weekend with a game against Saint Mary’s on Saturday, April 3 at 11 a.m. in the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. Saint Mary’s, ranked No. 60, is now 8-6 after a loss to No. 27-ranked Southern Methodist University on Sunday.
We hope the Saint Marys match will go very well with the home court advantage and that we can implement the different drills we have been practicing into our matches. It’ll be great if we can take them down; a big confidence boost to help us prepare for conference in a few weeks.”
