With the new school year off to a busy start, students are given numerous opportunities to become involved in diverse clubs and organizations on campus.
“Students should take advantage of these opportunities because they provide them with experience in the field and increase their understanding of their chosen discipline or another related discipline,” said Inter Club Council President Geoff Plourde.
Here are a few clubs to try:
Active Minds at Pepperdine
Working to increase campus awareness, Active Minds focuses on mental health issues among college students. According to this organization’s profile on vine.pepperdine.edu, their goal is to “remove the stigma that surrounds mental health issues and create a comfortable environment for an open conversation about mental health issues on campuses throughout North America.” The student-run organization organizes events on campus and participates in national events promoting mental health awareness.
American Sign Language (ASL) Club
ASL gives students opportunities to learn sign language or perfect their skill. The organization also promotes involvement in the deaf community through outreach programs. Students take part in various events and service projects to engage the Pepperdine community in American Sign Language programs.
Middle Eastern Peace and Awareness (MEPA)
MEPA is an organization that focuses primarily on issues, cultures and the geography of the Middle East. Students are given the opportunity to come together and host social events, movie nights and guest speakers promoting awareness of Middle Eastern happenings. MEPA does not hold any religious or political affiliations and welcomes all in taking part in expressing intercultural customs.
Culinary Culture Team
As an organization that partakes in educating its members through cultural food, the Culinary Culture Team also hosts community service events in which they feed the hungry. As stated on the organization’s profile on vine.pepperdine.edu, “Pepperdine Culinary Culture Team is dedicated to gastronomic exploration of various cultures.” The organization devotes a large portion of its time in carrying out Pepperdine’s motto, “Freely ye received, freely give.”
