Civil rights leader discusses "a new beginning"

October 20, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

Long time civil rights leader and minister in the United Methodist Church Rev. Dr. Joseph Lowery visited Pepperdine Tuesday evening as a part of this year’s Convocation Series.

Lowery said he believes a new era has dawned in this country in light of the Obama administration and the landmark of the first African-American president.

While many people in America have questioned the merits of President Obama’s Nobel Peace Prize Lowery stands behind the award.

“The rest of the world holds a different opinion Lowery said. To them [Obama] is a symbol of a new beginning a new era of peace.” Lowery expressed his faith in the “new beginning” that he said President Obama has brought.

“I am convinced that this is a moment in history where we can experience the joy of a new beginning.
