Longtime Malibu resident and celebrity Cher will be auctioning possessions housed in her palatial home this fall. Most of the possessions to be sold come from Cher’s Malibu home. A portion of the proceeds of the auction will be donated to charities, such as Operation Helmet, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund and the Children’s Craniofacial Association.
The auction will be held in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton, Oct. 3rd and 4th. Items to be auctioned will be on display at the Beverly Hilton Sept. 29th through Oct. 2nd, previous to the final auction.
Cher has done extensive charity work and has cultivated relationships with many charities.
Operation Helmet, one of the charities that will benefit from the auction, supplies troops in Iraq with free helmet upgrades not available through the military. Another beneficiary of the auction, the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, provides physical and psychological rehabilitation for troops who have been severely injured in combat. The auction’s final beneficiary, the Children’s Craniofacial Association, provides emotional support for children born with facial deformities.
“I think its great that people donate time and money to charities,” said freshman Megan Salinas, “Yet, I always question their motives. Are they doing it for attention, popularity, or do they really mean it?”
A press release from Sotheby’s and Julian’s Auctions said Cher is planning to sell pieces from her collection, not only the expensive Italian Rennaisance artifacts, but also jewelry, memorabilia and stage costumes from her three-decade career, as well as Cher’s Hummer.
The auction includes about 700 items, and is expected to bring in nearly $1 million.
“I have loved everything I ever bought,” Cher said in the news release. “I have loved them and kept them for all these years and now it’s time for them to go on.”
Cher’s career has spanned nearly 40 years, and she continues to reach young fans. Her last tour, The Living Farewell Tour, began last year and was the highest grossing concert tour ever by a female artist.
“I love Cher!” freshman Kylee Chacon said, “She was my first concert ever, and she is still awesome.”
Cher has been a cultural icon since the late 1960’s.
Cher got her big break while partnered with Sonny Bono, but she soon became known as the “more provocative and outspoken” half of the duo. She quickly became a fashion trendsetter as well, helping to popularize bare midriffs, bell bottoms, long, straight hair and the “hippie” motif.
In 1969, Chastity Bono, their only child together was born. Not long after this, in 1971, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour was launched, and was successful until 1974, when the two separated, and then later divorced.
Cher continued in her success with her own TV show.
In 1979, Cher made the decision to legally change her name to “Cher,” with no surname or middle name.
A new romance with Gregg Allman soon blossomed, and, Cher’s marriage to Allman produced one son, Elijah.
She dived back into her music career, and in 1982 starred in an off-
Broadway show and acted in several movies. After singing, writing, and even producing many more albums, she established herself as an outstanding performer.
Her awards are numerous and widespread, including 22 Top 40 Hits, (with twelve of these reaching Top 10 hit status), an Academy Award for Best Actress, an Emmy, and three Golden Globe Awards.
