A Ford Explorer careened over the edge of Malibu Canyon Road, landing on the canyon floor some 600 feet below, Monday afternoon. Authorities said the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle sustained moderate injuries.
The driver, 19 year-old William Bartnicki, had just passed through the Malibu Canyon Tunnel traveling westbound when his car went up onto the right shoulder and then fell over the cliff into the crevasse, California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball said in a news release.
Inspector Sam Padilla of the Los Angeles County Fire department said the accident occurred at 2:15 p.m.
Bartnicki, an Agoura Hills resident, reported back pain when emergency services arrived on the scene. He was airlifted out of the canyon and to UCLA Medical Center.
Kimball said the exact cause of the accident was still being investigated.
According to authorities, Bartnicki was talking to his mother on a cell phone when the vehicle went over the cliff and she then called for aid.
