Canyon Road closures delayed until 2015

February 15, 2014 by Ricardo Avila Alvarez

The start of the overnight Malibu Canyon Road closures will be delayed until January 2015, according to Mike Kaspar of Los Angeles County Department of Public Works.

Kaspar said the LA County Public Works is looking for a window to do the renovation on time while trying to minimize the impact it will have on the community.

As for the closure times, Kaspar said, “We [LA County Public Works] need to find out what the construction protocol will be.”

Back in September, the idea was to close Malibu Canyon Road from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. to begin a rehabilitation project.

The existing steel plating inside the tunnel was designed to keep debris from falling down.

This project is supposed to reinforce the plating to prevent potentially hazardous situations.

According to Kaspar, because of the delay between the initial projected start (January 2014) and the new projected start (January 2015), there may now be extra renovations required.

According to Google Maps, students taking the 101 exit from Agoura Hills to reach Pepperdine travel approximately nine miles in 15 minutes.

With the closure underway, students’ trips will be extended by 12 miles, increasing the estimated duration to 35 minutes if they were to take Kanan Dume Road.

Constructions on Malibu Canyon Road will commence after the works on Kanan Dume Road — which are scheduled to begin in late May or mid-July — are completed.
