Campus Rec revitalized

September 15, 2012 by Carly Hanna

Campus Recreation is ready to take the fall semester by storm. The facility is equipped with tons of brand-new classes and fixtures to match. It has been upgraded with a custom-built reception desk, new flat-screen televisions and larger lockers that guarantee greater storage space for bags and books. Over winter break, while Pepperdine students take a much-deserved respite from their studies, even more advances will be made to the studio, located underneath the bleachers of the Harilela International Tennis Stadium.

The new classes offered this semester include, but are absolutely not limited to: kettlebell power, power sculpt, core fusion and sessions of various yoga techniques. Assistant Director of Campus Recreation Becci Prather announces that they are “adding more classes to the schedule as well as adding new formats to stay abreast of trends in the fitness industry.”

A complete schedule with class descriptions and payment plans can be found on the campus recreation website: www.pepperdine.edu/campusrecreation/fitness/.

Not only is campus recreation keeping busy indoors, it is also putting forward many new outdoor activities throughout the next two months. The first trip to kick off the year is stand up paddleboarding. This event is scheduled to take place on Sept. 15 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Malibu Pier. Students are responsible for the fee of $25 per student and providing their own transportation.

The second event of the month is a nature and photography walk led by Professor Davis of the Center for Sustainability. The walk will be held on Sept. 20 and departs from the HAWC at 5 p.m.

The day hike to the Hollywood sign will take place on Sept. 22 followed by full moon night hike on Sept. 28. This free trip under the stars will depart from the Rho parking lot at 8 p.m. and hikers will be provided with transportation for the entire event.

The weekend of Oct. 5-7, campus recreation will present its God in the Wilderness voyage to Rancho Oso.

“Students will receive four convocation credits while spending the weekend camping in covered wagons while participating in hikes, horseback rides, campfires, devotionals, worships and so much more,” said Prather.

The cost is $40 for the trip or students can pay $55 which includes the weekend event and a horseback ride. God in the Wilderness is limited to the first 40 students, so be sure to get your name on the list. Students can pay and register for all trips with Campus Recreation in the HAWC.

The equipment shack is back in action as well. Where, you may ask? It can be found around the corner from the fitness center facing the hill toward the Seaver campus. You can visit it during normal hours, noon to 8p.m , Monday through Friday. The shack may also be opened up on Saturdays this year to give students the opportunity to rent recreation gear over the weekend. The gear offered includes tents, sleeping bags and pads, lanterns, cooking stoves, coolers and more.  A complete list of gear and prices can be found on Campus Recreation’s website, along with policies and rental information: www.pepperdine.edu/campusrecreation/outdoor/rentalprices.htm.

The fun doesn’t end there; fall intramural 7-on-7 flag football and indoor volleyball will be starting up shortly.

“Campus Recreation will have tables in the cafeteria when registration begins to help students sign up. Intramurals are free and open to all. No prior experience is required,” Prather said.

Team registrations will be completed online at www.imleagues.com. Also, intramural referees are wanted to keep score and time.

Lastly, keep your eyes peeled for a Frisbee disc golf course on Alumni Park. Campus Recreation began the project earlier this summer but is still waiting on the installation of the final two holes, the course map and signage. There will be an event to mark the grand opening of the course.

“We will look to add some new and unique excursions to the calendar this year, think ziplining and/or river rafting,”  Prather said.
