Better beware, the apocalypse is upon us

February 14, 2002 by Pepperdine Graphic

By Nick Mah

Apocalypse watch:

A couple updates for you.  Bush, after proposing the biggest hike in defense spending since Reagan (think Star Wars), is pushing legislation that could overturn Roe v. Wade (think abortion), and is finalizing plans to depose Saddam Hussein, despite opposing pressure from the rest of the world (think Hitler?).

Frightening, isn’t it?

Yes, it seems that during the surge in national pride for the Olympics, or maybe it’s the position of Saturn in Capricorn, we have decided to go insane, politically speaking. Or maybe we’ve just digressed in our thinking. Back to kindergarten.  For insane children.

It’s interesting to see a country so obsessed with itself that it actually chooses to repeat the exact same trials of our past.

There once was a time known as the 80s.  After reeling from Vietnam and the Nixon administration, Reagan and Bush took hold of our country to lead us back into conservative comfort.  We were happy, we loved our president and we had the biggest recession since the dust bowl. By overspending on defense and international intervention throughout the world, we created what we fondly refer to as the national debt.

Gee, that’s too bad.  We ought not do that again.

And does anybody remember that day in September — Sept. 11 I think? That was when “our freedom was attacked.”  It was attacked because those attackers were a little tired of “the evil empire” on the other side of the globe messing in their affairs.

If we continue with our global game of risk, we are going to get burned bad. Nuclear weapons can be bought on the black market and if we make somebody mad enough we will get attacked again. And again.

I just don’t understand how we can continue time and again to press our luck.

With Saddam Hussein, we would be opening up a new war just after we’ve finished one. Or is it finished?

No, I guess the war on terrorism will never end. So we’ll be fighting dual wars.  Right.

And, on a final note, if the whole world thinks it is a bad idea, why are we ignoring them? Must be because we’ve never made mistakes in the past.  Right.

As for the abortion thing, we’re giving rights to unborn fetuses. Now, the government has given pregnant mothers an insurance policy that gives the baby rights over the mother. That’s just got all sorts of philosophical implications that I don’t even want to sniff at.

Here are some miscellaneous notes that I thought I might mention.

In Taiwan, jailed mothers are beaten to cause abortions and/or are forced to smother newly born children.

The Russians fixed the Olympics.

Kate Hudson touched me.

This just in (and I’m not even kidding):

“All Americans everywhere should be at the highest state of alert,” General Attorney John Ashcroft said. The terrorists are going to attack again, and soon.

Heck, I called that one.
