Dear Grace,
Where are the best places to party on campus?
Sincerely,
Transfer Student
Dear Transfer Student,
Apparently you have yet to notice that there isn’t much of what you might call a “party scene” thriving in the hallowed hallways of Seaver College. One must keep an ear to the ground if one truly wishes to be privy to those most arcane secrets of the Pepperdine party network. I myself was unaware of the numerous outlets for fun-seeking undergrads until conducting the research for this very article. I yearn to educate you early on in hopes that you take full advantage of all that our campus has to offer in the extremely unfortunate event that you have no car, no friends and nothing better to do.
1. Mixology in the Sandbar
After surveying the senior class to find out where on campus serves the best and most delicious cocktails, I was shocked at how many people insisted I visit the Sandbar after hours. Indeed, I followed instructions and set up camp at one of the archaic, slow moving computer monitors around 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Expectations were far exceeded, as the Jamba Juice guy not only offered me a free sample of the seasonal strawberry flavor, but engaged in conversation with me over those secret flavors not listed on the standard menu. Tell me Transfer Student, can you fathom anything more thrilling and subversive than hosting a seditious Jamba tasting in such close, convenient proximity to your campus mailbox?
2. Pong in the HAWC
Younger students must understand that the HAWC has not always been what it is now. In days of old, the Howard A. White Center was a spooky, necessary evil which served as a right of passage for any freshman hoping to utilize all 1,100 of their Caf points. There was indeed a time when a limited inventory of frozen burritos, Wheat Thins and Mini Oreos seemed sweet relief in contrast to the even less appealing pre-La Brea cafeteria. In light of such a drastic transformation, the student body must affirm the university’s appropriation of budget funds by filling every seat, table and each square inch of standing room, proclaiming our approval by constant, overwhelming student presence.
3. Crossing boundaries, changing lives
Have you ever had a conversation with the hot La Brea employee? Neither have I. But my friends and I once devoted a two-hour block of time in tracking his every move, placing multiple sandwich orders in order to interact with him as much as possible. I would tell you his name but I feel it might make him uncomfortable, and if you look at the staff lineup, it’s really not so hard to tell. What I’m trying to say is, those people know how to have a good time. So maybe mix things up a little and put a good word in for me with the hot La Brea guy.
