ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

April 4, 2002 by Pepperdine Graphic

Ty Harper

SPORT:Baseball
YEAR: Junior
HEIGHT/WEIGHT:6-2, 210 lbs.
HOMETOWN: Newport Beach, Calif.

WHAT HE DID …
Ty has been tearing up opposing pitchers as of late as he is leading the baseball team in batting average (.354), total at-bats (127) and hits (45). He has obviously been the main target of pitchers as well as he is leading the team in getting hit by pitches at six so far this year.

Recently Harper has had a decent hitting streak going. Before today’s game, Ty had six hits in three games to help the Waves sweep the Santa Clara Broncos and help Pepperdine climb out of the WCC cellar. His hot bat could be the Waves’ ticket to the postseason as long as he remains in the lineup at the designated hitter position.

Ty transferred to Pepperdine this year after playing at Alabama last season.

FAVORITE MOVIE

“Days of Thunder” There’s a blast from the past if I’ve ever heard one.

IN HIS CD PLAYER …

Ja Rule

OFF THE FIELD  …

The Newport Beach native likes to keep it low profile off the field. He says that hanging out with the guys is pretty much the standard modus operandi when there isn’t a game to be played or they’re tired of playing poker at teammate Eddie Montague’s apartment.

WHAT HE’S GOT TO SAY …

As far as the postseason goes, Ty had this to say about the Waves chances: “It’s going to be good. We are going to finish the season on a good note.”
