Sonia Sorrell, chair of the Fine Arts Division, announced earlier this week that she would be stepping down from the post.
Sorrel, who is not tenured, has been at Pepperdine since 1994 and was appointed chair in August 1999.
“She’s been a good chair,” said art professor Avery Falkner.
Courses taught by Sorrell include Western heritage, non-Western art and architecture, Western art and architecture and multicultural arts in America. In addition to her teaching duties, Sorrel has also contributed to several art encyclopedias and presented numerous papers. She has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and master’s degrees in art history and ancient history.
The announcement is still making its way through the Pepperdine community, and the question of Sorrel’s replacement remains unanswered.
The reason for Sorrel’s decision has not yet been made public, and she has declined to comment.
The process of selecting a new division chair often takes up to a year. Generally, a committee composed of the division’s faculty and either the Seaver Dean or the Associate Dean will advertise the position and screen potential candidates.
The Dean’s Office could not be reached for comment.
