Say 'Howdy' to fresh Mexican food

November 24, 2008 by Pepperdine Graphic

Fresh pico de gallo and guacamole adorn the heaping mound of warm crispy chips slathered in a rich mole sauce and covered with black beans and melted cheddar-jack cheese. Unbeknownst to many the Super Nachos at Howdy’s Taqueria in Malibu reign supreme among other variations of the popular feast.

Dazed by the variety of menu options customers often disregard the nachos platter as a simplistic ordinary option. However when you taste it you’ll find quite the opposite-a euphoria of zesty Mexican flavors and textures with each bite. Adding to the fresh savory and imposing knoll of nachos one might enhance his or her experience with Howdy’s original refreshing salsas from Salsa Verde to the milder Deliciosa.

Known for a full menu boasting Cowboy Burritos to Mexican Pizza to the Malibu Chicken Tostada Howdy’s exists as a Malibu fixture nestled within the city’s ritzy yet wanna-be-beach-blasé shopping centre-the Country Mart.

As a small intimate bungalow Howdy’s immerses its customers into Hispanic culture with the mellowing vibes of Mexican music floating throughout the restaurant. Like an inviting Mexican family Howdy’s staff welcomes each customer with warmth and smiles. Jesse the manager spends his time conversing with customers asking not only about their food but also their lives. During slower shifts Jesse will even deliver the food to the table and offer to refill one’s beverage. Unlike many Malibu eateries Howdy’s surpasses in friendliness and service.

In addition to its tantalizing Mexican favorites Howdy’s recently added Sushi-Mex by Jose of Katsu-Ya. Drizzled with a sweet raspberry glaze the Malibu Crab Roll invigorates one’s taste buds. Similarly though a standardized roll at any venue the spicy tuna roll at Howdy’s remains unique in its addition of a dollop of savory tangy Mexicali sauce on each piece.

For those who consider Howdy’s just another burrito locale its menu service and atmosphere argue just the opposite. A step above the average walk-up taco stand Howdy’s continues to serve the Malibu community and welcomes each year’s wave of incoming Pepperdine students who will quickly learn to appreciate the 10-percent discount.

Despite Howdy’s marvels customers with a taste for the pessimistic should be forewarned-Howdy’s serves neither alcohol nor tap water. Minor critiques aside the next time one finds himself brushing Howdy’s off first reconsider then walk inside and order (gasp!) something other than a basic burrito-your taste buds will dance with excitement.
