Pepperdine University is mourning the death of a Drescher construction worker, a person University Chaplain D’Esta Love said was appreciated for his work to make the Drescher campus a reality.

“Today at the Drescher Campus, we honored all of those who have worked on the project, from those who designed it to those who labored with their hands to build it,” Love said in a statement. “It seems fitting to reflect for a moment on the tragic death of Pedro Cantu.”

Cantu died the morning of Sept. 3 after suffering a heart attack on the job.

According to Public Relations Office, 35-year-old Cantu, was working in the new honors apartments when he suddenly felt ill.

The Department of Public Safety, Pepperdine Fire Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the medical emergency.

Cantu was transported to UCLA hospital in Santa Monica, where he died later that day.

Love spoke to Cantu’s wife expressing the University’s sadness at the loss of her husband.

“We grieve with his wife and children and pray that God will sustain them from his love,” Love said.
