Fitting fitness into routine shapes up quality of life

As classes grow more intense and clubs start to demand more time, Pepperdine students find themselves struggling to fit physical activity into their busy schedules. Most people view exercise as a chore and end up putting it at the bottom of their to-do list. But you should move it to the top. Because what you may not be aware of are the numerous benefits that come with leading an active lifestyle.

Living on a campus of hills and stairs, it’s almost impossible to avoid all forms of physical activity. But for those of you who march up the 127 stairs to the CCB to get an extra workout might be disappointed to know that you burn the same amount of calories walking the same distance on a level surface (not that there are any on campus). But it’s not a total loss; stairs are a form of strength training. Unfortunately, walking around campus isn’t quite enough physical activity for those intent on living healthy lives.

The Pepperdine community offers countless ways for you to be physically active. Campus Recreation offers everything from kayaking expeditions to good old-fashioned hiking trips, not to mention the club and intramural sports. But if you’re not into the great outdoors, you can attend a variety of group exercise classes including kickboxing and body core workouts. If you’re not experienced, many of the classes are based on a beginner level. And if traditional workouts don’t get your heart rate up, you can certainly break a sweat in one of the dance classes offered like Fuego Latin dance.

In the absence of other health complications, an average healthy adult should accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week.
