Bobbi Walker is a freshman from Maryville, Mo. who came to Pepperdine to receive a good education and more importantly to strengthen her faith.
She is majoring in religion and constantly involves herself in activities of service. She has worked in New Orleans to help with hurricane relief and enjoyed mission work.
Last semester, she learned about Project Serve, a group on campus that goes to different locations during Spring Break to help enrich the lives of others and give back to the community.
She immediately became intrigued by Project Serve’s purpose and joined the organization.
Her mission is clear, her goals are precise, and her ambitions to be a woman of God inspires.
Why did you choose to do Project Serve?
“I did not want to waist my Spring Break getting wasted [like the typical college student]. I wanted to use my spare time to direct it towards something more productive.”
Where did you go?
“I went to Camden, N.J., and worked at Urban Promise a prep school where I worked with a secretary who taught me about non profit organization management.”
What experience did you gain from your trip?
“I ultimately learned that no matter what social or racial class, everyone has the same goals and ambitions, and everyone has the right to do what they want with their lives.”
How did project serve help you to become a person of purpose, service, and leadership?
“I know a lot of people
wouldn’t take on this opportunity if it was offered to them, but I felt like it was something that I could do to give back. Pepperdine gave me the opportunity to learn something new, and to give back, and I had to take the opportunity.”
How do you feel that God is present in Project Serve?
“The school where I worked was based on Christian beliefs and the kids were raised in
families that taught them the importance of God. The trip was a ministry mission, and before I knew that, I knew that this program, which Pepperdine made it possible for me to participate in, was one where I could give back, which is the will of God.”
If you could change something about the trip, what would it be?
“I wouldn’t change anything about the trip other than the fact that I would have liked it to be longer. I would like to have spent more time with the kids because they were so great.”
Would you recommend that other students participate in Project Serve?
“I believe that students should participate in Project Serve because it is not only a way to serve others, but it is also a good way to fellowship with others who have the same goals and ambitions as you do at Pepperdine.”
