Face in the crowd: Laura Colvin

College is about dreaming big dreams and working hard to accomplish one’s goals. Sophomore Laura Colvin knows this all too well. She wants to make a name for herself in the cut-throat film production industry. And, with the hands-on experience she has already gained at Pepperdine, her aspirations are not out of reach.

Colvin, a telecommunications major, knows the value of dedication and hard work. The producer of the channel 26 Sport’s Report as well as the producer for the new DVD yearbook, Impressions, she is a telecommunications major on campus who will continue to climb the production ladder until she reaches the top.

How did you become interested in telecommunications?

I actually started off in theater and directed some things in high school. When I got here, I got involved in production, and now I am kind of in this all-around phase where I want to get up on stage, produce, direct, just everything. I have to figure out what area I want to go into.

Is production something you always expected to do?

Actually, I came in a history major and just became a techie nerd this year. Last year, I went to the NSO Sport’s Report meeting and signed up. By midterms, I was teaching seniors how to work the equipment, and I just sort of took over the show.

Do you know what you want to do after college?

Yeah. I would love to go into the movie industry. I love movies and television.

You are the producer of Sport’s Report. Does that mean you have an interest in sports?

I fell in love with the show because of the environment and the people. It is so much fun. The cool thing about the Sport’s Report is everyone is there because they want to be. If you walk in while we are working, you will always hear laughter. I mean, I like sports, but mostly I chose to do the show because of the atmosphere.

What does being the producer of a show entail?

Basically, a producer runs the show before and after it airs, and the director takes over in between. Producers make sure that everyone has rundowns and knows what is happening. Basically, they make sure that there is a show.

How did you land the position as the first-ever DVD yearbook producer?

When they decided to try the DVD yearbook as a different option, I met with the people in charge and it just took off from there. It is an ongoing project, and that is what makes it so different from video and film. Those you can get done in just two days straight, which is probably why I want to do movies — they eventually end. No, but I am excited to do the yearbook, because we are covering absolutely everything.

How do you think the video yearbook will come together?

It is going to be amazing. I really hope that people like that new medium, because I am really excited about it. There are just so many things you can do with video that you cannot do with print, but, then again, that is true the other way around, too. You cannot really replace one with the other, but hopefully the video will be more user-friendly.

Other than being the producer of Sport’s Report and the producer of the video yearbook, what activities are you involved with on campus?

Some other telecom stuff that I do is I run audio for the Random Show, I run studio for the PTN, which is the Pepperdine Television Network. I did some slide show work for Project Serve, and I am currently doing that for LSA, which is sort of a “Dancing with the Stars” thing. I am basically the hired help — I am not really involved, but sometimes they give me candy and that makes me happy.

Another thing I do that is a little different is I am in Gamma Phi Beta. Then again, I did the movie for recruitment, so basically that is all do. The communications building is my home.
