People & Their Pets: Paul Martins and Buddy

September 25, 2008 by Pepperdine Graphic

Laura Johnson
Life and Arts Editor

So, you have a dog.

Yes.

What kind?

A weimaraner, and his name is Buddy.

How old is sweet Buddy?

Not applicable. Let’s just say he’s 69 (in dog years) and in his prime.

Is he just your dog or everyone in your house’s dog?

He’s everyone’s dog — the four boys who live here.

Why do you have a dog?

I don’t know — probably because no one else will sleep with Brice, my roommate. But, Buddy’s love and affection is just never-ending. And, he protects us.

Would you say you’re a dog or cat person?

Dog. Definitely.

What would it say about you as a person if you did happen to have a cat?

Well, cats are evil skeets. They break your heart, while dogs are just about love and affection.

Do you take Buddy for walks?

No, never. He runs outside all day. He frolics in our orchards in our backyard. Okay, we did take him on a run the other day…

Does Buddy like you?

Of course, he loves me.

Are you sure or is that just what you want me to believe?

No, seriously, he follows me everywhere. And, what are you saying — that my dog doesn’t like me?

So, which one of your boys brought Buddy to the house?

Oh, well he came with the house. This is his house, he owns it, he is the landlord.

No, but where is buddy from?

The house. We pay rent to a weimaraner. Really. [Martins refused to comment further on his dog’s orgins.]

Thank you, Paul.
