Weekly Top 10: What to give up for Lent

February 7, 2008 by Pepperdine Graphic

LAURA JOHNSON
Assistant Life Editor

Although the top 10 ways to earn Mardi Gras beads may seem more thrilling, the truth is there can only be so many ways to drop the top, so here, instead, is a compilation of things to do during the six weeks when we reflect on the miracle of Christ’s resurrection and the time leading up to it.

No longer just for Catholics, giving up whatever for Lent has become a rather trendy thing to do. Here are some cool things to say if people ask what you’re giving up.

10. Hard drugs: Maybe this is something to give up just in general, though.

9.Coffee/black tea/Coke/anything else with caffeine: Treat friends and loved ones to wonderous behavior when the headaches kick in from not having the necessary hourly dosage of the stuff.

8. Pepperdine athletics: Oh, that’s right, no one actually goes to those games anyway.

7. Sleep: It’s overrated. After all, you can sleep when you’re dead.

6. Facebooking: Just imagine for a second a life with no Facebook.

Wow, way too scary. Let’s hope no one lets go of this one.

5. Television: With so many amazing new show episodes on right now, this would be a hard one to give up.

4. Brussel sprouts: This is the one I always tell people I’m giving up. Obviously, I don’t eat these anyway. Is that cheating?

3. Not skipping class: Listen to your mom for once, take responsibility for your own actions and don’t not show up to class. (See #7 for more information as to how to make it happen.)

2. Food in general: People in Malibu are pretty sparse on eating anyhow so, hey, what’s another six weeks?

1. Kissing: Kidding! This should never be given up. This is life.

May God help you through this trying time.
