Chicago’ receives 13 Oscar nominations

Tuesday’s Oscar nominations favored “Chicago,” “The Hours,” and “Gangs of New York.”

“Chicago” led the number of nominations with 13 and fell shy by one nomination of tying “Titanic’s” all-time record. “Gangs of New York” received 10 nominations, while “The Hours” received nine.

The five nominees for Best Picture are “Chicago,” “Gangs of New York,” “The Hours,” “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Tours,” and “The Pianist.”

Zeta-Jones testifies in London courtroom

“Chicago”star Catherine Zeta-Jones testified in a London courtroom Monday in a suit that she and husband Michael Douglas filed against “Hello!” magazine for publishing unauthorized photos of their wedding in 2000.

The Douglases sold exclusive rights to their wedding photos to “OK!” magazine, but days before the photos ran “Hello!” published photos of the wedding.

The couple is suing the magazine for half a million British pounds (about $1 million) in damages for loss of income, stress and damage to their reputations for the alleged lack of quality of the photos. 

Lollapalooza set to tour summer 2003

Representatives of Lollapalooza announced Monday at a press conference that it will tour 28 cities this summer after a six year absence.

The tour will feature tour founder Perry Farrell’s group Jane’s Addiction, Audioslave, Queens of the Stone Age, Incubus and Jurassic 5.

The tour began in 1991 as a debut for Jane’s Addiction. During its seven years on tour it included the musical talent of Ice-T, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam.

Cities on this summer’s schedule include Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami and New York.

‘Sin and Shampoo’ premiers Saturday

Pepperdine’s student theater society, Cognitive Dissonance, will present the premiere of its short film “Sin and Shampoo” Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Elkins Auditorium.

The film stars Jeremy Lostetter and Taylor Batolucci and was written by T.J. Volgare and Ryan Webber.

The admission price is $1 and includes refreshments. Advance ticket sales are not available and seating will be on a first come, first serve basis. 

No ‘Sex and the City’ on prime-time

Representatives of ABC, NBC and Fox television networks told the Associated Press Monday that they have no desire to air a cleaner version of HBO’s Emmy Award-winning “Sex and the City.”

According to Variety magazine, HBO approached the TV networks with an offer of approximately $3 million per episode. 

VH1 to rebroadcast Jackson documentary

VH1 has announced that it will re-broadcast “Living with Michael Jackson,” British journalist Martin Bashir’s documentary on the pop star, this weekend.

The documentary will air Saturday at 9 p.m., Sunday at 8 p.m. and Monday at 10 p.m.
