ONLINE EXCLUSIVE — With only two shows remaining, audiences have just two chances to see Nevin James and company perform the original social justice rock opera “Death and Victory in Paris,” while at the same time gaining a new outlook on life.
Friday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 8., a group of student artists will take the stage at Smothers Theatre at 8 p.m for the final performances of the production, which has been performed on campus for the last two years. On Saturday, free Coffee Bean refreshments will be served.
“The point of this show is to speak for the voiceless, and to exemplify the sweetness of God’s redemption,” said James, a recent Pepperdine graduate who wrote, directed and performed in the opera.
James said he decided to entertain an audience with folk music and also use his musical talents as a gateway to enlighten people about modern-day slavery, or human trafficking.
The rock opera depicts the story of a girl swept up from her home and forced into the devastating world of human trafficking. It is also the story of a young man fighting to believe.
The storyline begins in America and makes a transition into another part of the world to show that human trafficking is a worldwide issue.
“There will be at least 10 people on the stage at all times,” James said.
According to James, the efforts of the entire team have made his vision a reality.
“My band is incredible,” James added, “We didn’t even meet before; I just knew the people would be right for it.”
All summer, James and his talented band of 12 have been touring the nation coast to coast entertaining and encouraging their audiences.
“The tour was incredible. It is a musician’s dream,” James said.
James’ dream originated with his love of music, love of entertaining and passion to speak for those unheard.
“I use my God-given gifts to shed light on an important issue,” James said.
James believes the issue of human trafficking is an extremely relevant concern because, as he noted, this could happen to any of us at any time.
James received Pepperdine’s Service and Social Action Grant for the 2010-2011 school year in order to pursue his rock opera project.
“This generous grant was used cover the project and allowed us to tour,” James said.
James plans on taking a break from the music scene and said he looks forward to giving his all in the final shows of the opera.
