Drescher road closures cause congestion

September 27, 2011 by Alysha Tsuji

UPDATE: The road appears to be repaved and traffic is flowing as usual.

ONLINE EXCLUSIVE — Via Pacifica, the road that leads up to the Drescher Graduate Campus and student housing, has recently been plagued with construction work leading to long lines of cars on both sides of the street.

According to a DPS officer on duty at the construction site, the water running off the hills caused drainage to gather underneath the road, which eroded the bed over time, causing the road to become unstable.

The exact timetable for the project is uncertain at this point, according to an officer guiding traffic.

“It could get done by tonight,” the officer said, “or it could take a couple days. I really don’t know.”

Construction workers have been working on digging out and paving over the street throughout the day and even into the evening for the past several days.

Tractors and cement rollers take up the right side of the street leading up the hill, but DPS has two officers on walkie-talkies guiding all traffic through the left lane going down the hill.

Seaver junior Mariana Lizarzaburu, who lives in the Drescher apartments, is mystified by the sudden large amount of roadwork.

“To begin with, I don’t think there was a problem with the roads,” Lizarzaburu said. “It’s been going on for a while though, so there must be something wrong. It’s been bothering a lot of people.”
