Community Reacts to Shooting on Social Media

November 8, 2018 by Kiley Distelrath

As Pepperdine students, alumni and family members wake up today, they face the tragic reality of a nearby shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill where reportedly 20 Pepperdine students spent their evening last night.

The community joins together on social media to react to this tragedy. The following are the reactions of the community on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

I am okay. I’m not injured beyond minor cuts, and I and the people that I went with to Borderline are all safe. What happened last night was the single most terrifying thing I have ever experience in my life. We had been at borderline for no more than 10 minutes, when we heard the first round of shots go off. We heard glass shattering, we all scattered and I can say for me everything that happened next was a blur. Everyone there has their own story of how they reacted and what happened and where they were hiding, but everyone ends prayer. For those of us who got out safely, please pray that we learn how to handle this, because it’s not easy. For those who didn’t, please pray for their families and loved ones as they handle this loss.

I can’t say good morning today. Because for the people of the Thousand Oaks Borderline shooting, and my fellow Pepperdine students who were there and are still not yet accounted for, it is not a good morning. They are in my thoughts.

Remember to tell people you love them today.

My heart aches for the victims of last night’s mass shooting and their families. #Pepperdine is my alma matter. The safe place where I met my lifelong friends. We never thought twice about leaving campus to have fun. That’s no longer true.

I’m a Pepperdine student and when I heard about the shooting I realized several of my friends were there. One of them is still missing. I’m so sick of this. Will it ever stop?

My heart is heavy for all of the victims and ones effected by tonight’s tragedy. I went to Borderline while at Pepperdine and shared many good times with friends. If there is anything we can do to help, please let us know @pepperdine.

Never thought I’d have to write this but a note from @pepperdine president to the university community after the #Borderline shooting in #ThousandOaks. Heading to my alma mater for our coverage and to be with the people that will always be part of my family.

Several people have reached out to check in on me, and I’m okay. I was not present at Borderline last night. In fact I’ve never been. I have a large group of friends that attend regularly, and I’m devastated and scared that they may be included in the 12 killed, or may have been injured. Even if they aren’t killed or injured, the associated trauma from this event will be with them forever.

I’m so sick and tired of writing about shootings.

I’m so sick and tired of “thoughts and prayers.”

I’m so sick and tired of a— calmly walking into public spaces and stealing lives like they are cheap packs of gum you’re sneaking into your pocket at the gas station.

When is it going to be enough? How many more people have to die?

I’m sick and tired.

Dear friends and family, please lift up the community of Thousand Oaks and the greater Los Angelas area up in your prayers! This tragedy hits so close to home as so many of my Pepperdine colleagues were there last night! Our community is crushed, our hearts are broken! Please be in prayer for the families and all affected! 💛

Georgina Fang: Any Pepperdine student hurt? My son is in his junior year at Pepperdine. We have been so worried since the breaking news of CNN on air at our time (Taiwan time) 4 hours ago. Pray for those who lost their loved ones in this sad evening…. Please keep us updated.
