Sudden-death overtime is often the most pressure-packed situation an athlete can face in any sport. The women’s soccer team found this out on Sunday afternoon in their first West Coast Conference match of the season.
The 7th-ranked Waves edged out the Lions of Loyola Marymount, 3-2. The Lions, who entered the game with a 4-6-3 record on the season, took an early 2-0 lead in the match. Pepperdine cut the lead in half on the first goal of the season for Freshman Defender Ashley Copp at the 30:12 mark. Copp knocked in a cross from the right side off the foot of Junior Forward Lindsey Redlin.
Pepperdine rallied from the 2-1 deficit at half to tie the game midway through the second half on a pass from Senior Forward Jenna Fodor to Redlin.
The game remained tied through the rest of regulation and through the first ten-minute overtime. Then Fodor one-timed a pass from the Waves third forward, Megan Woods, for the game-winner in overtime #2. The goal came in the 113th minute of the match.
The big victory also had another bright spot for the Waves. It marked the return of star defender Senior Daniella Bosio. Bosio played solid defense after being out of the Waves rotation for over a month.
The Waves now sit at 10-1-1 heading in to Friday’s home game with Gonzaga.
This battle with the 9th-ranked Bulldogs kicks off at 3 p.m. Gonzaga, whose record currently sits at 9-3-1, enters the match coming off a heartbreaking loss to 2nd-ranked and perennial national powerhouse Portland this past weekend.
