Western Coast Conference Briefs

March 20, 2003 by Pepperdine Graphic

Gonzaga, San Diego, both make NCAAs

The West Coast Conference will have Gonzaga and San Diego to represent it at the NCAA National Men’s Basketball Championships. This is the eighth time in league history the WCC will have multiple teams in the tournament.

The No. 9 Zags will make their sixth appearance at the NCAAs in Salt Lake City to face Cincinnati.

San Diego, the automatic qualifier, will see Stanford in the first round in Spokane, Wa.

LMU claims two WCC weekly titles

Loyola Marymount owns WCC headlines this week, boasting WCC/Rawlings Player of the week, third baseman Jonathan Oller, and WCC/Rawlings Pitcher of the Week, Vincent Cordova.

Oller claims this title for the second consecutive week, going six-for-12 against Portland, adding four homeruns, 11 RBIs and 18 total bases.

Oller, a Tarzana native, is batting .375 and has a 1.500 slugging percentage.

He also hit the second and third grand slams of his career. LMU’s baseball team has won 14 of its last 17 games.

Cordova takes the pitching honor for the second time this season after a win at Portland, 6-0. He threw his first shutout of his career.

Cordova struck out nine batters and walked one at Pilot Stadium. He has allowed only 10 earned runs in about 41 innings.
