Campus Rec to provide beach gear

Beach equipment for student use will be purchased by SGA, according to a resolution passed Wednesday. The resolution will allocate funds to Campus Recreation to purchase the equipment.

Surfboards, body boards, fins and snorkel gear are among some of the equipment that will be available to students. They will be loaned out for free along with the already existing sports equipment.

“Campus Rec. is doing a lot of great things and a lot of students don’t know about it,” said SGA President Kevin Mills. “This is a good way to get students to participate more and a way to benefit the entire student body.”

Campus Recreation plans to have trips and excursions to teach students how to use the equipment properly, and to provide an outlet for student involvement.

“We will have really fun trips and lessons,” said Clint Harp, student manager for the outdoor education program. “Also, for students that have never surfed before, we are trying to make videos that will teach you how to surf or kayak.”

Equipment is scheduled to be available at the beginning of next semester.

Also, on Tuesday, Freshens Smoothies and Pura Vida coffee will open in the Sandbar.

“Freshens is a lot like Jamba Juice,” said Ryan Harvey, SGA vice president of administration.

“They make really good fresh fruit smoothies.”

Also featured at the newly remodeled Oasis is Pura Vida Coffee, an organic coffee comparable to Starbucks and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

“A portion of the proceeds from Pura Vida actually go to orphans in coffee manufacturing countries,” said Harvey. Some countries include Ethiopia, Guatemala and Costa Rica.

From 5 to7 p.m. SGA will be giving free drinks to the first 250 who arrive.
