An employee at Ogden Cleaners in the Malibu Colony was shot dead Friday night in an altercation with a family member.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, 53-year-old Gay Smith and her nephew, 22-year-old Jamal Flowers, were involved in a dispute at her Los Angeles home. After arguing, Flowers armed himself with a handgun and fatally shot Smith in the head.
Smith’s 31-year-old daughter, Denise Clark, was also shot three times in the torso. She is listed in stable condition at a southwest Los Angeles hospital.
Flowers reportedly shot himself in the head after shooting Clark and died from his injuries.
The 53-year-old Smith had one daughter, Clark, and two grandchildren. The younger of which, a 5-year-old girl, was at home at the time of the shooting.
Smith, who was known as Gayle to friends and family, had worked at Ogden Cleaners for 10 years and was known throughout the community.
“Everybody knew her,” said Tracy Stone, who worked with Smith at Ogden for seven years. “She was just a very lovely, wonderful, down-to-earth person.”
A memorial service for Smith will take place at Malibu Vineyard at 6 p.m. Saturday. A memorial fund for Smith has been set up at the Bank of America branch in the Malibu Colony to raise money for funeral services.
