In their first conference game of the season the women’s basketball team had no problem continuing their winning ways as they rolled over the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks with a 96-67 victory last Friday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.
“Obviously we are excited to get a win. Coming out and starting the season off with a win is what we were focusing on head coach Julie Rousseau said.
Four of Pepperdine’s players scored in double-digits in the team’s 29-point win. Senior center and captain Miranda Ayim led the team with 16 points.
It’s good to see everyone making contributions Rousseau said. It’s a team effort— we say that our strength is in our numbers.”
Even though the Waves shot an impressive 41 percent in the paint it was their frequent trips to the free-throw line that defined the game. Pepperdine shot 73 perfect from the line making 35 of 48 free throws throughout the game. The whistle was heard often throughout the game and the Waves got the double-bonus advantage in both halves.
Although the final score of the game was somewhat lopsided the first half was a balanced match. The Waves started the half off quick with a 6-0 scoring run but the Lumberjacks followed shortly after with a 6-0 scoring run of their own to tie it.
With 12:04 left on the clock freshman guard Shay Cooney-Williams started another scoring run with a shot in the paint. Sophomore guard Lauren Bell complete the 14-3 scoring run with two layups four minutes later with 8:12 on the clock and put Pepperdine ahead 27-13.
The Lumberjacks scored two back to back three-pointers immediately following but weren’t able to catch up. With 3:37 left in the half a 12-5 scoring run ended the first half with the Waves holding a 13-point lead.
The second half was a similar story. The Waves had an early 16-4 scoring run. At 13:17 left in the game the Waves led by 20. Senior center Taylor Snider started another 14-6 scoring run with a shot in the paint that put the Waves up by 27 at 83-56.
Even though Northern Arizona scored the final six points the final buzzer sounded with the Waves up 96-67.
The Waves were statistically dominant the entire game snagging 11 steals in the first half and scoring 17 points off of Lumberjack turnovers.
As Rousseau stated earlier it is the depth of the bench that allows the team to be successful.
“I thought that our depth is what made the difference tonight Rousseau said. “I think we wore Northern Arizona down a little bit.”
Pepperdine hit the road on Monday for a three-game road trip in Northern California. They started the road trip with an 83-66 win over San Jose State on Tuesday.
Ayim along with returning sophomore guard Jazmine Jackson doubled up to lead the team in scoring notching 15 points each. As a team the Waves shot 45 percent from the field compared to the Spartans’ 38 percent.
Pepperdine was statistically better in every category. Their 79 percent from the free throw line was far superior to San Jose’s 45 percent and the Waves had 13 steals to the Spartans’ nine.
The first half was fairly close. The Waves took a 12-8 lead four minutes into the game. With 4:41 left in the first half the Spartans went on a 10-0 scoring run giving themselves a 31-25 lead. Pepperdine answered back with a 12-1 scoring run ignited by sophomore guard Skye Barnett. The half ended with the Waves up 38-32.
