Third annual Career Week comes to Pepperdine

January 27, 2011 by Patrick Rear

The third annual Career Week started Monday and continues through the end of the week. Career Week began several years ago as a program directed at graduating seniors but was later expanded to include all classes and all of Pepperdine’s schools and satellite campuses.

“There are 45 programs taking place at five locations in Southern California said Amy Adams, director of the Seaver College Career Center. Between them the programs will serve all students — undergrad graduate and alumni as well.”

Similar to previous years Career Week is packed full of valuable informational sessions covering topics from effective résumé building to how to look good on social media for prospective employers.

“There are also ‘webinars’ online for students who need them Adams said in reference to the online sessions held Monday through Wednesday evenings.

Thursday night we have our featured SoCal Social at the California Yacht Club in Marina Del Rey Adams said. The speaker for the event will be Carrie Click a former White House protocol officer.”

While most events are free for students tickets to attend the SoCal Social costs $12 in advance and $15 at the door.

“It will be a great night for good food and a chance to meet new people. The presentation will help students learn how to enter the professional world and not be afraid of it.”

Shuttle services for Seaver students will be provided to and from the event which begins at 7 p.m. and continues until 10 p.m. Before the SoCal Social students may also attend a résumé critique at 6:30 p.m. to receive the advice and assistance of professionals in preparing and improving resumes and cover letters.

Other events taking place include the seminars: Money 101 at 1 p.m. and Money 102 at 2 p.m. on Friday in the Fireside Room. Barry Garapedian senior vice president of wealth management at Smith Barney will discuss short- and long-term financial strategies.

Other seminars offered include the “Taking a Break” Gap Year workshop which helps students realize their options and plan for a successful year before entering the workplace or continuing on to further education after graduation. The Dress For Success Fashion Event seeks to help women build an effective wardrobe to use in business situations. The Pepperdine Women’s National Association of Women’s MBA chapter brought Kimberly Bordonaro of Prostyle Image to present at the Drescher Campus on Wednesday night. In order to close out Career Week a showing of “The Social Network” will be held in Elkins Auditorium on Saturday Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.

Pepperdine’s Career Week is designed to prepare students for the Career Fair on Feb. 15 where students will have the opportunity to network with a variety of possible employers. More than 800 people have registered so far for Career Week (mostly students) where 22 companies nonprofits and government agencies will take part in the Career Fair events.

Additional information about Career Week events can be found at the Career Week Central booth which has been set up in Adamson Plaza or on the Career Center’s website.
