Two drivers were arrested under the suspicion of driving under the influence during a checkpoint in Malibu. According to a Malibu Patch, the deputies have also impounded three vehicles and have also issued 14 citations last Saturday during the checkpoint at Pacific Coast Highway and John Tyler Drive.
This past weekend, there was also another checkpoint Friday night at Tuna Canyon and PCH.
These checkpoints are part of the LA County Sheriff’s Department effort to remove intoxicated drivers and to heighten awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.
This effort hopes to improve the negative national statistic. In 2010, more than 10,000 people were killed in traffic crashes involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or greater.
In the state of California, almost 800 deaths occurred due to drunk driving. Brooks also reported that the 21 to 24 age group represented the highest percentage of drunk driving accidents. Just in Malibu, the LA County Sheriff’s Department recently investigated two crashes that were fatal and 28 injuries related to DUI accidents.
