Women's Golf: Women take first continue winning ways

October 8, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

In Sammamish Washington on Monday and Tuesday Pepperdine’s women’s golf team third in the Edean Ihlanfedt Invitational. They had the second best round of the day which helped them in their rankings.

According to Golf World/National Golf Coaches Association coaches poll Golfweek/Sagarin and Golfstat Pepperdine is ranked number 2 7 and 8 respectively a sizable improvement from last week’s rankings of 12 and 13.

On an extremely tough par-72 at the Sahalee Country Club the Waves shot a 14-over 302. Pepperdine began the round in sixth place and after jumping three teams shot a two-round total of 613.

Despite this achievement the team still sees room for improvement according to sophomore Jessica Wallace.

“We just need to keep focused on improving the parts of our games that we feel need work Wallace said. There’s always room for improvement with golf no matter how well you do.”

Although none of Pepperdine’s players were able to clinch the top ten individually the team still managed to be in the top 25.

Ending in 11th place sophomore Kaitlin Drolson continued her steady playing with a 3-over 75 giving her a total of 152. She shot no birdies on Tuesday but had a total of 16 pars.

Sophomore Lisa McClockey shot the best round for the Waves that day. She improved by five strokes and shot a 2-over 74. Right below Drolson McClockey is tied for 12th place at 153. Before a couple of bogeys late on the course McClockey opened the round with 14 straight pars.

Tied for 14th place at 154 junior Marine de Gannes is just below her Wave teammates at 75. She got a total of 3 birdies during her round.

Junior Taylore Karle tied for 19th place at 155 and several below her Wallace is tied for 25th place at 158. Karle shot two birdies and Wallace had one during their rounds.

“I was a bit disappointed with my first tournament to start the year but I’m proud of the way I managed to bounce back in the following tournament Wallace said.

Pepperdine placed first in the first two tournaments of the fall and barely dropped down to third place in this past tournament.

I’m really looking forward to this year because I think this team has the potential to be a contender at nationals and we all know what we’re capable of Wallace said. We have faith in ourselves and each other out there and that’s huge.”

Next up for the women’s golf team is their fourth tournament the Landfall Tradition/NCAA Preview Invitational Oct 23-25 in Wilmington N.C.
