Spring Break service trips take students around the world

March 17, 2011 by Edgar Hernandez

Over Spring Break 175 Pepperdine students went on service trips all around the Western Hemisphere. In its 10th year the students split into teams that volunteered time within the United States and in countries of Fiji Guatemala Honduras Panama Ecuador Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

Junior Jazmyne Sutton who went to Seattle said that her Project Serve trip “challenged [her] to see homelessness and poverty differently mentioning that her and her team, gained so much insight and are incredibly blessed by the people at the mission.”

In her trip to Honduras Junior Joelle Takahashi explained that they spent the week performing different services like visiting the patients of a rehabilitation center helping vaccinate people that needed vaccination and building a latrine for some families.

Takahashi commented that the families they helped “were so gracious and kind to the team. It was a great experience being able to work alongside them.”

Junior Christina Krone went on her second trip to Fiji with Project Serve. “It was amazing to see that a lot of people remembered me from last year.”

“Providing service and being kindly remembered for it really touches my heart Krone concluded.

A group of Pepperdine students also went to the Dominican Republic with ICA as a separate entity from Project Serve. There they helped villagers with their daily needs like clothes, shelter and food.
