IJM hosts Invisible Children event

October 5, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

In the past 22 years30 000 children have been abducted to fight for a rebel army in northern Uganda.

Invisible Children a non-profit organization dedicated to saving these children and returning them to their homes mobilizes people worldwide who are passionate about eradicating the injustices occurring in this war. They sponsored a multi-national event during April of 2009 called “The Rescue.”

“The Rescue” drew media attention as participants camped out in cities around the world making the plight of the child soldiers known.

Here at Pepperdine University the International Justice Mission sponsored an event for Invisible Children to get Pepperdine students involved. On Monday Invisible Children representatives visited campus to preview a film of “The Rescue.”

“The point of the event was to inspire students to stand up and fight injustice said junior Blake McAlister, president of the International Justice Mission. Whether it’s child soldiers sexual slavery genocide or global poverty these injustices can and will be changed as soon as you and I choose to do something about it.”

Students at the event learned simple ways to join the Invisible Children movement including signing a warrant on the organization’s website against Joseph Kony the leader of the army that has been abducting children since 1987. Invisible Children representative Chad Stanton said this will help accomplish one of the group’s main current goals which is “pushing the United States government” to get involved.

To get involved with International Justice Mission the club meets every Monday night at 9:00p.m. in the HAWC.
