The men’s golf team closed out its fall season with a tie for eighth place at the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate in Kahuku, Hawaii. The Waves finished with a three-day total of 31-under par 833, which was 33 strokes behind the University of Tennessee who finished at 64-under par 800. The field included West Conference foes University of San Diego, University of San Francisco, Loyola Marymount University and second place finisher St. Mary’s University.
“We’re all kind of disappointed with how we played in the final two rounds,” senior co-captain Eric Shriver said. “But overall, looking at the entire semester, we think we played pretty well.”
The Waves were led by freshman Andrew Putnam, who finished in a tie for third place after shooting rounds of 67, 71, and a final round 63. Putnam lost by one stroke to Charles Ford of Tennessee and Sean Shahi of the University of California-Irvine. Putnam’s 63 tied a school record set by Jason Allred at the 2000 Western Intercollegiate.
In his only two tournaments this year, Putnam has lost both by a single stroke. He finished in second place at Pepperdine’s annual Club Glove Intercollegiate in Somis, Calif., held Oct. 22 and 23.
“I started off kind of slow today but I heated up on the back nine,” Putnam said yesterday. “I played well and had the putter going pretty good all three days.”
Shriver finished in a tie for 21st at 8-under par after shooting a 3-under par 69 in the final round followed by senior Jesse Barnsley who finished tied for 44th at 5-under par. Senior Colin Wilcox finished tied for 70th at even par and red-shirt sophomore Carl Smith finished tied for 80th at 3-over par.
The Waves are back on the links in February at the John Hayt Collegiate held in Jacksonville, Fla.
“We are looking forward to the spring season and winning a couple more tournaments,” Shriver said. “And working towards our goal of contending for a national championship.”
