Women's volleyball team fights against breast cancer

October 21, 2009 by Pepperdine Graphic

When we think of October orange and black are two colors that come to mind. But this Oct. it seems like everywhere one looks there is an unexpected color: pink.

Breast Cancer Awareness month is in full swing and pink ribbons are showing up everywhere on campus. It is a month that should involve a call to action to fight the most common type of cancer among women.

For the month of Oct. thousands of women’s volleyball teams across the nation are partnering with the Side-Out Foundation for breast cancer research. Athletes are putting on Dig Pink matches in their hometowns to raise funds to fight this breast cancer.

The Pepperdine women’s volleyball team will be hosting its fourth annual Dig Pink match on Thursday Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. here at home in the Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves will be playing University of San Francisco. In the hope of raising a thousand dollars for the Side-Out Foundation the women’s volleyball team is hoping the the local community will support and donate to their charity.

Senior outside hitter Rachel Grochmal described the significance of a sports team giving back to the world through charity.

“I think as athletes we sometimes can be caught up in our own busy life Grochmal said. Dig Pink allows us to remember the importance of charity and helping the world around us. I think it is a fun way to make donations for such an important cause.”

The gym will undergo a “pink” transformation for Thursday’s match and hopefully the crowd will do their part by wearing pink as well. The first 100 students to arrive at Firestone Fieldhouse will receive specialized “Think Pink” T-shirts and prizes will be given away throughout the match. Donators will receive prizes including a commemorative pink signed volleyball for each of the top donations.

Grochmal participated in Dig Pink during her first three years at Pepperdine and she said this one could top them all.

“I feel that over the years Dig Pink is getting more recognition which is great Grochmal said. I just want it to continue to grow and each year so that we can really make a difference. It would be great if the student body would come support us and we could get a big crowd for this event.”

Donations will be taken at the game as well as online at the link: https://www.side-out.org/application/teams/team_page/1211
