New sports info director joins Pep athletic staff

August 27, 2007 by Pepperdine Graphic

DAVID NAKAGAMI
Assistant Sports Editor

Pepperdine athletic teams need a website, their statistics recorded and publications. All of this and more is part of the job for the athletic department’s newest staff member, Roger Horne. Horne was recently named the sports information director for the Waves, replacing Al Barba. Barba, who worked for nine years in Pepperdine’s sports information department, was hired as the Assistant Commissioner for Media Relations of the California Collegiate Athletic Association.

Before being hired by Pepperdine, Horne worked as an assistant in Oregon State University’s sports information department for two-and-a-half years. The allure of heading a Division I program in his home of southern California is, as Horne put it, “incredibly appealing.” Unable to pass up such an enticing opportunity, he decided to make the trek south from Corvallis, Ore., to Malibu.

An alumnus of nearby University of Southern California, Horne said he anticipates getting acquainted with the athletes and coaching staff of Pepperdine’s various teams. More importantly, he aims “to tell their stories to a wider audience.”

“I am blessed to have this opportunity at such an elite school, both academically and athletically,” he said. “I look forward to working with people across campus.”
