Fall tournament action came to a close for the Pepperdine men’s tennis team as senior Richard Johnson fell in singles and junior Andre Begemann and sophomore Omar Altmann fell in doubles at their respective championships.
Johnson was defeated in the semifinal round as the No.-3 seed at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday. The senior fell to UCLA’s Michael Look 6-2, 6-4.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the country, the Wave duo of Begemann and Altmann were defeated in the consolation semifinal round at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio. The pair fell 8-5 to Alex Cojanu and Colin O’Brien of the College of William and Mary.
The Wave tandem had received an at-large bid into the doubles championships, while Begemann received an automatic bid after winning the singles championship of the ITA Western (South) Regionals on Oct. 23, at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
Begemann fell to Utah’s Zach Ganger in the second round of singles competition, but he said he enjoyed his trip to the Buckeye state.
“It was obviously disappointing to lose,” Begemann said. “But I was satisfied. I mean, I had a great fall.”
Begemann and the Waves will look to defend their national title when the 2007 season begins Jan. 19 at Illinois.
