Finishing in the Top 5 for the first two tournaments of the fall season, the No.-10 Pepperdine women’s golf team is off to a solid 2006-07 campaign.

The Waves traveled to their neighbor state and competed against 16 other teams in the three-day Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown that concluded Wednesday at the par-72, 6,175-yard Anthem Country Club in Henderson, Nev.

The Waves’ final-round 2-under 286 helped them finish third behind Oklahoma State and Arizona State that registered 9-under par score of 855 and 1-over 865, respectively.

Individually, senior All-American Eileen Vargas performed consistently throughout the tournament and finished as the top finisher for Pepperdine as she totaled a 1-under 205 to tie Da Sol Chung of University of Nevada at Las Vegas for eight place.

“The course was nice, and I’m pretty happy about how I played this week,” Vargas said. “I hit the ball really well.”

As the only senior and the most experienced player on the team, Vargas is leading the Waves to another solid season.

“We have one more tournament this fall season, and we want to play well again to get ready for the spring season,” she said.

Vargas was not the only Wave who scored low this week. Sophomore Jayvie Agojo shot a final-round score of 3-under 69 to finish the tournament with 1-over 216 and tied for 12th with five golfers.

Freshman Misun Cho registered a total of 3-over 219 to finish 21st, while junior Leanne Bowditch tied for 22nd with 222 with an impressive second round score 2-under 70.

Pepperdine’s final event of the fall season will take place in Hawaii, where the Waves will compete at the Aloha Purdue Collegiate Invitational on Nov. 22.
