While other fall sports began a few weeks ago, the Pepperdine men’s golf team will finally tee off its 2006-07 campaign when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., to compete at the William Tucker Intercollegiate tournament.
After losing six players from last season, this year’s Waves are looking young and fresh with five newcomers under 11th-year Head Coach John Geiberger.
Four of the newcomers are recruits: junior transfer Eric Shriver, freshmen Shane Mason, Chad Vivolo and Olin Browne Jr., joined by a walk-on freshman Andrew Widmar, who became the first ever to make the Pepperdine golf team through tryouts that ended Sept. 13.
“It’s something that I’m proud of,” Widmar said. “It feels really good. It’s such a good program – third all around the nation. It’s just that I’m really glad that I’m able to do it.”
Asked about the first impression of this season’s young team, Widmar also said his teammates are nice.
“Everyone is getting along really well,” he said. “It’s really exciting to start the new season.”
Echoing his teammate, junior Colin Wilcox also said his crew is looking solid even though it has little experience as a team.
Wilcox is one of three returning players, joining junior Jesse Barnsley and sophomore Carl Smith.
