Pep runs to solid finish in Fullerton

While the dreary weather this weekend may have ruined plans for that barbecue bash, the Pepperdine cross country teams were enjoying the fine running conditions, finishing second among collegiate teams for both the men’s and women’s races Friday in Fullerton.

The women’s side was led by junior Tarrah Crowley, who finished 19th out of 85 runners and broke the tape with a time of 18:50 on a five-kilometer course. Frehsman Brie Carroll and junior Kyla Maher finished not far behind at solid times just behind nine minutes, solidifying Pepperdine’s place just behind San Marcos.

On the men’s side, senior Chad Trammell led the Waves to another high finish.  Trammell took eighth out of more than 100 runners, with a time of 25:15 for a slightly longer eight-kilometer course. Sophomore Sam Hudson finished next for the Waves with a time of 26:05, and sophomore Matthew Jenks finished in 26:27.

Trammell said he was pleased with the team’s performance, noting that just about everyone on the team ran their fastest times, which is certainly a good sign for the upcoming West Coast Conference Championships.

“I really feel like our training is starting to pay off at the right time with conference next weekend,” Trammell added.

Halloween weekend may mean questionable costumes and an annual excursion to Vegas or Santa Barbara, but next weekend is all business for Malibu’s fastest on foot. The team will be heading to the Bay Area to participate in the WCC Championships in Belmont on Saturday.

Although to the cross country novice, it may seem like this week would be crunch time to prepare, Trammell begged to differ.

“Most of the preparation has been done already,” Trammell said. “Now we are just trying to get everyone healthy and rested up for this weekend and to do a little speed work to keep everyone sharp.”

Many runners on the team have yet to see the course, but Trammell said he is confident that it will be one of the most competitive meets ever. A tighter pack means Pepperdine’s chances to sneak their way up to the top improve.
