Pepperdine senior Chad Trammell led the men’s cross country team to an 11th place finish Saturday at the Cal State Fullerton Invitational in Fullerton.
Trammell, who missed much of this past season with an injury, placed ninth for the Waves as Pepperdine kicked off its season with a decent showing in one of the premier events on the West Coast.
The eight-kilometer course yielded a time of 26:37.60 to Trammell, who finished one minute, 10 seconds behind the first-place finisher, Jess Baumgartner of the University of Southern Utah.
Cal Poly Pomona took the overall team title in the men’s division, finishing with a total of 67 points. Pepperdine’s team total of 268 put them 11 points behind crosstown rival Loyola Marymount University, which placed 10th.
The Pepperdine women’s cross country team put together a 10th-place finish at the 24-team invitational thanks to a solid effort by sophomore Lauren Morales, who placed 29th with a time of 19:47.30 in the five-kilometer race.
University of San Diego’s Tiffanie Marley took the individual title with a time of 18:26.00, while UCLA won the team title with a total of 90 points. Pepperdine finished with 276 points.
